Well, howdy! Aub here! It’s only reasonable I take it upon myself to go over the highs and lows of some of my all-time favorite MTV classics! So, sit back and relax as I take us down a small trip to memory lane.
Now, I was going to compose this list all into one post, but considering I have quite the number of thoughts ready to spill out about each video, expect more of these to come!
Naughty Naughty by Danger Danger
Oh, absolutely the first one up in this series is going to be Naughty Naughty by Danger Danger. Not only do I love this song, but the video has also always been a favorite.
I think a very important question we have to ask is, what the hell is even going on within the first 10 seconds of this video???
Danger Danger popped out into the scene in 1989 with their self-titled debut album and a whole lotta hair. Consisting of Kasey Smith on keys, Bruno Ravel on bass, Andy Timmons on guitar, Steve West on drums and Ted Poley on vocals, it’s clear this group was destined for their time in the limelight. They emerged with bright, passionate energy and a perfect sound to coincide with the demand for upbeat, partying rock n roll. With this came not only hit after hit, but top tier music videos seeping with 80s magic. So, without further ado, Aub takes on the Naughty Naughty video.
Good lord there is so much happening here… but no complaints whatsoever because I eat it up every time. The absolute energy this video alone emits, I mean, who else does a keyboard breakdown like Kasey Smith??? I need to kick this off by mentioning that insane bassline Bruno Ravel puts down. AND THE PINK BASS! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Needless to say, the video just started and its already gold. Steve West goes absolutely crazy with that stick spin around the 37 second mark. 80’s drummer perfection.
The sheer chemistry between Andy and Bruno alone here… I absolutely love it. So many good duo shots of them, plus lots in the background if you watch hard enough and considering how many times I’ve watched just to gather all my thoughts properly, I’d know.
Subtle side tab of the outfit choices here and how there was clearly quite the wardrobe with each member having what looks like two outfits, with more of a leather vibe and a laidback one with denim and t-shirts. Danger Danger is one band that I can safely say nailed the fashion of the era every time. Whether that be with regular styling or going full glam, they never missed.
On another side note, I think it’s important to mention just how hard Ted Poley is selling this image right now. The subtle turn as he gets into singing the first verse? Excellent. Perfectly crafted. He knows what he’s doing, no denying that. Continuing on, the single crystallized notes Kasey Smith is laying down has me on the FLOOR. It fits so well, adds to the mysteria of the naughty aspect of the song. The sweet but dangerous feel. Plus, his hair in this video is incredible. You’ve got to hand it to him.
In addition, one of my most favorite things about this video is just how many group shots there are and just how much fun they appear to be having. Certainly, it makes the vid more watchable. Having Bruno adlib the majority here was an excellent choice as well. My guy is SELLING it! The 2:12 mark is something in itself. Ted??? Watchu doing there bro??? The slight hand running up his leg as he hits that “lOoOove” note? Crazy! Now, how did he craft a moment that perfect? I’ll never know, but my god does it fit and go so in tow with Ted’s barbie doll blonde image. Watch out, Vince Neil.
One more time I must point out just how hard Bruno Ravel is giving everyone else a run for their money here. The all denim fit, the pink bass, the hat, the adlibbing. All of it! Although I must say, Andy Timmons certainly comes close with his picture-perfect looks and jaw-dropping stage presence. Even having only been able to record two of the solos on this album after being grouped into the band late, he stills adopts these solos and makes them his own with his playing and the complete adoration that seeps through when he does. It’s such a sight to see.
I must mention how much I enjoy watching the solo here. Once again, Andy TIMMONS, everyone, selling it beyond words.
Now, it’s only right I mention that totally on brand, ridiculously on par talking monologue near the 3:39 mark. Now Ted… who’s idea was THAT! Whosever idea, brilliant. Fits the vibe perfectly, specifically with the split scenes between Ted and the faceless man and girl. I’m pulled in every time, no matter what watch I’m on.
Nearing the end of this gem of a video, the zoom-ins on the “hey!”s are still one of my most favorite parts about this entire video. If there’s anything these guys could do, it was make whatever they were doing look nothing short of fun. Now at the end, the video ties all together with each member at the telescope, either pointing like a maniac or throwing up an awkward thumbs up (yes, I’m looking at you, Steve.) I’d say he makes up for it though with that super cute stick toss and smile at the camera around the 2:57 mark ;).
Well folks, there you have it, my thoughts on Danger Danger’s ‘Naughty Naughty’ music video. Can you guess what’s up next? Peace and love, Aub. ❤
